Tales from Hollywood North

It is a strange and wonderful thing to work on film set, no matter your position, or talent.
I have just entered my twentieth year of working as an Actor and profession Background Performer, and have as much love and wonder for the industry as the first day I worked.
Which, incidentally, was a commercial that, thanks to a small budget, judicious editing, and an ability to look like different people easily, I wound up being in the same scene, playing three different characters.
I hear a few out there saying . . . , 'Oh, background! That is so demeaning, it's not even real acting!'
Actually, nothing could be further from the truth.
Try this sometime. Watch your favourite shows, and instead of watching the actors, instead focus on all the people in the background, walking back and forth, carrying things, doing things, filling in the blanks.
If they are good, professional people, you will hardly notice them, except that subconciously, they will fit right in with the scene.
However, sometimes, they don't.
A good PA will recognize this, and place such people far from the action, letting the pros do all the main work.
Funny thing, being a Background Performer is not the most lucrative of professions, something we also share with the majority of actors, who make, on average, as much per year as your basic fast-food server.
Then why do we do this?
Insanity?
Dedication?
A desire to be rejected and abused?
A hope to be discovered?
The answer is all, none, and some of the above.
For all those who desire to make a career of acting, one must make sacrifices, no matter the cost.
Personally, I do it because I love it, love the people I work with, and love the shows I am a small part of, and take immense pride that whatever my contribution, I have given my all to said production, in the hopes of personal fullfillment and satisfaction in a job well-done.
This is just the first in a series of observations, and I hope that you folks out there will be amused and leave informed about some of the goings-on with this wackiest of professions.
Until the next time, keep it weird!
