Taxation Without Representation

Would You Tolerate Taxation Without Representation?

Americans living in Washington, DC have a lot in common with Americans living in other parts of the country. Both pay taxes, serve on juries, and defend the country during times of war. There is difference however in that the citizens of Washington, DC have no say in Congress.

Small group of senators are blocking the bill

After more than 200 years of DC's injustice, Congress is on the verge of solving this problem. In April, the House of Representatives passed the DC House Voting Rights Act, a bill that would give DC citizens their first-ever vote in Congress. The bill also cleared a Senate committee, and the next step is a vote on the Senate floor. Except that a small group of senators are blocking the bill.

Resource references:
- DC Voting Rights Act
The DC Voting Rights Act is the bipartisan consensus bill sponsored in the House of Representatives by Tom Davis (R-VA) and Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) that would grant District residents one voting member in the House.

- The Library of Congress
To provide for the treatment of the District of Columbia as a Congressional district for purposes of representation in the House of Representatives.

This is taxation without representation, it's wrong, and your help is needed to correct it. Please urge your senators to help bring democracy to the nation's capitol.

Contributor's Note

Here's what the supporters have to say:
I fail to see why mere geographic location within the United States can be used as an instrument to disenfranchise citizens.

Perhaps this originated in some specific situation, but times have changed and these people must vote.

I think that all citizens of the United States has the right to vote. They the people of Washington, D.C. should never have been left out.

Cannot believe that the residents of D.C. full and equal American citizens are denied the right to vote---time for change is Now!!!!!!
