The problems with the Atkins Diet

America is the fattest country in the world which is why our obsession with being thin is almost ironic. There are several ways to tackle being overweight but dieting remains at the forefront of the solutions. The most popular diet in recent years is the Atkins Diet. However, many skeptics have continually pointed to Atkins Diet problems. Atkins’ dieters and the company itself defends the program citing their own medical research but the fact still remains, Atkins Diet problems are prevalent and substantiated by countless health care professionals and nutrition experts.

The most common of the Atkins Diet problems is the way it restricts carbohydrates to evoke a metabolic state called Ketosis. Ketosis is a state in which carbohydrate levels are so low that the muscles in the dieters’ body have no choice but to burn fat which many dietitians and doctors have call destructive. In addition, it has been pointed out that such weight loss programs typically cause accelerated calcium losses which has raised questions about their link to such health conditions as heart problems, kidney abnormalities, and osteoporosis. Scientific studies have also shown that low carb diets dramatically increase cholesterol levels in many people.

Atkins supporters are just as strong as their critics and have substantiated data from reliable sources. Adkins.com reported back in April that the American Heart Association supported research that recently verified the benefits of a controlled-carbohydrate approach to weight loss above a low-fat method. Atkins cites research that links the trimming of fat approach to diabetes and hypertension as well as the ongoing debate linking a diet high in refined carbohydrates with cancer. The Atkins Diet problems debates are far from over as one side builds a case the other will surely be there to refute it.
