The Truth about Mystery Shopping
Mystery shopping (aka secret shopping) sounds alot better than it is. I have worked to employ mystery shopping companies and I have tried my hand at mystery shopping. I am here to tell you that there may be some good companies out there but there are many terrible companies. Personally, with how the industry is structured, I would not mystery shop again. They are getting skewed results since their process is burdensome and the pay is practically non-existent no matter how long you have been doing it. Each company you work with has its own form, primarily online. The worst type of company to work for are the fast food franchises. The questions they ask and the number of questions are ridiclous unless you would be outfitted with some type of new stopwatch calibrated for their needs. Needless to say, I doubt they are getting accurate results since no one can stand in line and secretly do everything they want you to do. They tell you that you will get more and better 'shops' if you get a ranking in the MSPA or Mystery Shoppers Providers Association . There are two levels - silver and gold. The silver can be completed online and the gold requires a full day seminar. I personally don't know what a "better shop" would be. I still do not think there was even one I did that was worth my time. With that said, if you ever venture into it, never ever pay anyone to get you a job! FTC Consumer Alert I can guarantee you will not ever get your money back. I found the field of Mystery Shopping to be tedious, time consuming and a tad frustrating. |
