Think Out Side of the Box -er!
When choosing a family pet what is the first thing that comes to mind? Young, small, furry? How about this... tall, stately, athletic? These are some of the words that come to mind when I think of the Boxer breed. They are also fun loving clowns that will capture your heart, like pirate Billy here! The SD Boxer Rescue takes in an average of 60 dogs a year. Dependent on foster families to help house the dogs until they are adopted, the rescue is always looking for more qualified help. The number one resource for this type of rescue is a safe home willing to invest in the care of one of these beautiful dogs. As a non-profit, volunteer driven organization the SDBR can benefit most from cash donations. This helps provide adequate veterinary care, food, and supplies for rescued dogs. Dogs that come in with an unknown history can have high vet costs, as they need a full physical and complete updates on their vaccinations. Their website provides the option to make a secure online donation through paypal. They also except donations of beds, toys, collars & leashes, and high quality treats & food. When asked what an adopter should consider before choosing this breed, Cheri F. advises "Boxers need to be an indoor dog and want to be a part of your family. They are also a highly athletic breed and need exercise - and just a walk on a leash is not enough!" The advantage to adopting from a breed specific, foster based rescue is the wealth of knowledge they can provide you. Often a new adopter will choose based on looks, but in this situation the rescue staff can really work with you to find the dog who will fit your lifestyle. The foster families can tell you about the needs and likes of each dog. Also, since they've been living as a well loved house pet they often come house trained and familiar with basic obedience commands. If you think a boxer may be right for your family you will want to stop out at the Sioux Falls Petco (3110 S Louise Ave Sioux Falls, SD 57106) location on Saturday, May 17th. They will have a meet and greet with some of the available dogs, and volunteers will be available to answer all your questions.
