Tuatara hatched on Matiu-Somes Island in Wellington Harbour, New Zealand...
The New Zealand Conservation Department, long involved in the conservation of endangered species in New Zealand, are over the moon with reports coming out of Victoria University(Wellington)that a sibling has been hatched for the tuatara reported hatched on Matiu-Somes Island in Wellington Harbour. Tuatara as a species have been around for millions of years, and could be described as the ancestors of modern lizards. The pair are the first known offspring of the 54 Brothers Island tuatara transfered to the island nine years ago. The two eggs were found in a buried nest in May 2007, and were taken to Victoria University to be incubated. The find has confirmed New Zealand scientists hopes that the reptiles were mating on the island. A researcher said the baby tuatara would be released into the wild as soon as possible.
