My introduction to eczema didn’t come from my own pain and suffering, but from watching my son agonize from the uncontrollable itch. As a new mom six years ago, I didn’t know what to do. So, I did what any new mom would do – I consulted his pediatrician. Her solution was prescription-strength cortisone, followed by a thick, clear petroleum-based ointment with steroids. I wasn’t happy with this solution and started looking at more natural alternatives. I soon discovered a company that uses essential oils in their products. That fateful discovery really changed things for us.
In May of 2005 my daughter was born. By the time she was six-months-old she showed definite signs of following in her older brother’s footsteps. Luckily, at the first sign of outbreaks I reached for the exact same products I’d been using on my son. They’ve worked wonders for her as well.
Know Your Options
There are a lot of companies marketing natural alternatives. The truth is that 99% of them are not as natural as they claim to be.
One of the oldest forms of healing and wellness is through the use of essential oils. Essential oils are processed into three grades: therapeutic, food, and commercial/perfume grade. The therapeutic grade is the only grade with true health benefits. The other grades are cut with chemicals, alcohol and synthetic ingredients. This makes them of poorer quality and cheaper to produce and sell. It is the commercial grade that you will find in most products that say they contain essential oils.
Of all the companies in the United States that manufacture and sell products with essential oils, only an elite 1% use therapeutic-grade essential oils. So when shopping for products to aid in the healing of eczema symptoms, the first question to ask is if they use therapeutic-grade essential oils?
True essential oils will be listed by the natural Latin name of the plants they were extracted from. For example, in the ingredients you’ll see something like:
Lavandula Officinalis (Lavender oil) or Tea tree oil (Melaleuca Alternifolia) .It doesn’t matter if the true Latin name or the common name is listed first; all that matters is that the true name is present.
If the integrity of the essential oil is altered in any way, you will see something like this:
Natural fragrance (lavender oil).
You will pay slightly more for products containing 100% pure essential oils as opposed to what you will pick up at your local discount super store, but for the health benefits, it’s worth it.
Advice from a Mom
Once you experience the true benefits of essential oils there’s no turning back. You’ll have a new respect and appreciation for natural healing.
Here are some tips to help you as you embark upon your new relationship with essential oils. These same concepts were instrumental in my transition. I hope you find them helpful as well:
* Go with the Best – Remember, therapeutic-grade essential oils are what you want. Anything else is simply a waste of money and toxic to your body.
* Be Smart About It – Don’t be so hung up on price that you overlook the true objective of what’s at stake. Your health and your time are more valuable than the price tag. Think it all the way through.
* Mix it Up – If used incorrectly without the proper knowledge, many essential oils can be hazardous. The best suggestion I can offer is to find products with a blend of the essential oils you need.
* Don’t Give Up – To see the long-term benefits of health and wellness with essential oils you have to be consistent. Regular, committed and consistent use is what is going to contribute to your overall success. Good luck!
