Two Free Ways To Create Videos Of Your PC Screen

If you ask around, everyone will tell you about the big kid on the block: Camtasia. If you watch any amount of tutorial video on the Internet, you'll see the familiar Camtasia graphics immediately.

Camtasia isn't cheap. the latest version is several hundred dollars. To get you started in screen capture video production, try out these two alternatives. Both work great.

Cam Studio

This one sounds a lot like Camtasia, and is quite feature-rich.

- Records demo videos in AVI or Flash format (swf)
- Can produce training materials
- Great for marketing presentations (lots of youtube videos are created this way)
- Can be used to capture a gaming session or other important activity for later review
- Records audio right along with the screen movements.
- Produces streaming or downloadable video
- Provides the ability to annotate the production (add notes)

The Jing Project

- Works on both Mac and PC
- Your project is hosted for free on Screencast
- You have up to 200meg of space - plenty for most small projects
- You can cut your project into pieces if it's too long for one recording session (there are limits)

The Jing Project is run by Techsmith (the people who brought us Camtasia). Camstudio is a bit more flexible in that you have more control over your content. Both have their place, and create presentable materials for launching a business on a tight budget.
