Urethane Mastic - The Next Generation in Urethane Technology

While many quality urethanes are on the market (and can be self-priming with the correct surface preparation), a recent shift has taken place towards a product with new urethane technology. This product is called a urethane-mastic, and is available from several paint & coating manufacturers.

These are also typically self-priming urethanes and are available in a wide variety of colors. This allows the paint applicator to speed up production time by cutting out an epoxy primer. While an epoxy primer with a urethane topcoat is usually a more sound system, sometimes the production rates of steel fabricators and industrial facilities can be increased substantially by using one or two coats of urethane-mastic instead. You will need to contact your paint supplier for each individual paint application to see if the performance requirements of this direct-to-metal urethane mastic system will meet your needs.

I have listed below several qualities to look for when selecting a urethane-mastic from a paint supplier:

1) Make sure the product has the capability to be applied direct-to-metal and applied over tightly adhered rust

2) The type you select should have excellent gloss & color retention; Make sure this is mentioned on the data page

3) The selection should also have good UV stability, be user-friendly when it comes to mixing, and the ability to be applied by air or airless spray, brush, and roll

4) Make sure an accelerator is available to speed up production and dry times in the urethane-mastic coating you select

5) To ensure your urethane-mastic coating gives you great performance, try to perform a SSPC-SP6 (Commercial Blast Cleaning) surface preparation
