Here's some things to think about when placing your ads, whether on your blog, or website: Many blogs feature a picture of the blogger themself on the header. it's a good idea to put your advertising there where people are likely to be aware of it.
The general rule of thumb would be to place advertisements near where important or eye catching items are located.
The following are eye catching items that are usually the first thing anybody notices when visiting a website (its due to human psychology, which is why you're quick to recognize human shapes even from a distance). In order of the most likely to be recognized first, they are:
What shapes will visitors see first?
- Human faces (especially the face is looking straight at the viewer)
- Human figures or silhouettes
- Eyes and orb shaped items (A lot of square and rectangle based shapes make up websites due to design & technology norms, so circles stand out)
- Animals
The following are the most commonly viewed areas of a website. A study was done using eyeball trackers to users viewing website.
- Left top area (where most website logos are, including this one)
- The exact middle of the website, excluding the browser bar.
- Middle left section (starts of most paragraphs)
- Bottom of currently viewed area (not to be confused with bottom of the page)
And language notes & reading gravity
- The majority of readers and languages are from left to right, and up to down.
- Certain Asian languages (from the Middle East, for example) read from right to left.
Good places to put ads, where it will perform (in the context of a blog)
- At the end of articles/blog posts. Where the comments section is.
- Left sidebar, below navigation/images (Note: Ads on a left hand sidebar usually perform better than on a right hand sidebar).
- Right below your image header.
- Within a blog post with text flowed around it (at the start of the post, or somewhere in between)
- In between blog posts. Large rectangular ads work better here.
v1.1 : More to be added/amended based on user comments and feedback! I won't stop until I get an A!
