Versatile Rosemary
Rosemary is an evergreen shrub with needle-like leaves. The light-colored, scaly bark and leaves give an overall grayish-green appearance to the plant. Outdoors in favorable conditions it can grow to 6 feet high by 4-5 feet wide. It can be grown indoors but is not the easiest container plant, because the roots are susceptible to root rot with too much watering and if under-watered it dries out quickly and dies. It prefers well drained soil and full sun and propagates easily by cuttings placed in a glass of water or moist sand or sterile rooting mix. Rosemary lends it self nicely as a decorative topiary. It makes an excellent bit of fragrant greenery in the house at Christmas also. It was also used in Christmas decoration. History---The Ancients were well acquainted with the shrub, which had a reputation for strengthening the memory. On this account it became the emblem of fidelity for lovers. It holds a special position among herbs from the symbolism attached to it. Not only was it used at weddings, but also at funerals, for decking churches and banqueting halls at festivals, as incense in religious ceremonies, and in magical spells. At weddings, it was entwined in the wreath worn by the bride, being first dipped into scented water. A Rosemary branch, richly gilded and tied with silken ribbons of all colors, was also presented to wedding guests, as a symbol of love and loyalty. Together with an orange stuck with cloves it was given as a New Year's gift – In early times, Rosemary was freely cultivated in kitchen gardens and came to represent the dominant influence of the house mistress 'Where Rosemary flourished, the woman ruled. It was an old custom to burn Rosemary in sick chambers, and in French hospitals it is customary to burn Rosemary with Juniper berries to purify the air and prevent infection. Like Rue, it was placed in the dock of courts of justice, as a preventative from the contagion of gaol-fever. A sprig of Rosemary was carried in the hand at funerals, being distributed to the mourners before they left the house, to be cast on to the coffin when it had been lowered into the grave. In many parts of Wales it is still a custom. Seasoning--As a seasoning, Rosemary is both strong and subtle. It is a pungent herb with a slightly piney, minty, ginger combination of flavors. It goes well with just about any meat or fish, especially when roasted. It enhances cheeses, eggs, many vegetables, and other herbs, .such as chives and thyme when included in a recipe. Rosemary was one of the cordial herbs used to flavor ale and wine. Medicinal Use-- Rosemary is known for its tonic, astringent, diaphoretic, stimulant properties. Oil of Rosemary has the carminative properties of other volatile oils and is an excellent stomachic and nervine, curing many cases of headache. It is employed principally, externally, as spiritus Rosmarini, in hair-lotions, for its odor and effect in stimulating the hair-bulbs to renewed activity and preventing premature baldness. An infusion of the dried plant (both leaves and flowers) combined with borax and used when cold, makes one of the best hair washes known. It forms an effectual remedy for the prevention of scurf and dandruff Magickal Use-- Rosemary is bound to Sun and Fire. It's presence on the body is said to aid in memory and learning. Try putting a sprig in your pocket before an examination, meeting, or other situation where mental clarity is important. Rosemary is also believed to be a protective herb. It can be made into a wreath, and placed above the door or under the bed for protection from evil. Try it in a dream pillow or put it in a pillowcase to protect and ward off bad dreams. As a cleansing and purifying agent in magic, Rosemary is one of the more important herbs. It is used in herbal baths - placed in cheesecloth or a coffee filter tied with string and place it under the running bath water. If time is a factor, use it to wash the hands instead of the ritual bath in advance of performing rituals. Rosemary is associated with love, friendship, and remembrance. It is also helpful to emotional spirit, youthful outlook, and pleasant memories.
