Vincent Van Gogh * Paradox of Deprecating Brilliance

Of over 1000 drawings and 600 paintings, Vincent Van Gogh sold but one painting while alive. However in his varied career, he was commissioned early on to draw street scenes and paint portraits.

At first dark sombre pieces, his studies developed a brighter style of painting.

In Paris 1886, connecting with impressionism Van Gogh was also influenced by the post impressionists, eager to learn and develop. Among the associations were Gaugin, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Emile Bernard, Edgar Degas, Paul Gauguin, Camille Pissarro, and Paul Signac.

Moving to Arles in 1888, the best of what we know as Van Gogh was painted there and while in assylum at Saint Remy. There is indication that he felt cared for by his doctor at Saint Remy, whose portrait he painted, and under whom he thrived.

Perhaps what the poor man needed was TLC! The best of his proficient and prolific body of works were in the last three years before taking his life.

The works of this prolific master only gain in popularity with time. It is so hard to imagine his complete lack of business success and his deep insecurity with his work.

Most unique and intriquing is the preservation of letters and writings which reveal Vincent's thoughts and personality. He continually writes of the hope to one day be good enough.

If only he knew, that in fact he was more than that - we love his work still. He left behind a legacy of brilliant talent, awe and intrique!

MUCH OF VAN GOGH'S WORK IS HIGHLY SUITABLE FOR MANY VARIED DECOR APPLICATIONS
