Walk Your Dog to Weight Loss

If you own a dog, why not use your pet as a great excuse to get moving? Your canine friend loves to get outside as often as possible. A brisk walk, even only 1/2 hour a day, 5 days a week can result in noticeable positive health effects and weight loss, particularly if you combine those efforts with a sensible diet. Walking is easy on your joints and does not require special equipment. Just lace up the shoes and put on a coat, if necessary. You'll need a sturdy leash for your dog, and perhaps some clean-up bags to be polite.

Before you start an exercise regime, check with your doctor to make sure you are in good enough health to do so. Walk in well-lit, safe areas. You may want to consider reflective gear and/or a whistle, depending on the area in which you live.

The more often you get out to walk the dog, the faster you may see results. Brisk walking for 1/2 hour may burn between 180-200 calories (based on a 150 pound woman). This figure can be increased even more depending on speed and incline. Happy Trails!
