The Weekend to End Breast Cancer is a 60 kilometer, 2 day walk benefiting breast cancer research. The weekend events are held in the participating Canadian cities, from June - September. Participants raise donations throughout the year, and all monies raised, go towards research, treatments, and finding a cure, to end this terrible disease!
Myself, personally, I am involved with this AWESOME event, as a member of the Moto-Safety Crew. We ensure that all walkers are safe, and kept inspired for the duration of the walks.
The walkers start their day on the Saturday morning, from Ground Zero, in the participating city, at 6:00am. They walk through some scenic, as well as some very busy areas in the cities! Along the route, there are rest areas, and pit stops, at which to get something to drink, as well as energy boosting snacks. They are also provided with a healthy lunch, and even some entertainment!! The walkers usually will cover a distance of approximately 35kms the first day, ending around 6:00pm, at tent city.
Upon reaching tent city, an area, which is usually a large park, the walkers are treated to warm showers, a full dinner, and live entertainment. There is also the best bra contests, which are really fun! After all this, walkers crawl into their assigned tents, and get a good nights sleep.
On Sunday morning, they are up at the crack of dawn, served a scrumptious breakfast, and off they go for the final leg of their journey.
Arriving back at Ground Zero, around 4:00pm, all walkers then proceed to holding, to wait for all to arrive.
Following this, are Closing Ceremonies.
Being a part of these moving weekends, is something I will never forget!!
The courage of these walkers...some young, some old... they are all true heroes!!!! I applaud each and every person who has ever been involved in this momentous event!
Myself and my husband, we will be there again this year, cheering the walkers on, keeping them safe, and keeping them inspired!
