What Exactly Is PageRank?

So, what is PageRank, exactly?

It's Google's own way of "ranking" how popular and important your website is, compared with others. Your site can rank anywhere from no page rank at all up to 10 - 10 by the way is reserved for Google ;-)

On average, most websites and blogs have a PageRank of 3 or less.

How does PageRank REALLY work? Oh, if one only knew the answer to that...one would be the richest person on the planet ;-)

But from what most experts say, there is a formula that Google uses to rank your site, based mainly on the number of quality links TO and FROM your website or blog. In theory, the more places that link to your website that have higher PageRank (PR4, PR5, PR6...), the higher your website or blog will rank (but usually not higher than the inbound links to your site.)

So, in that last paragraphs contains one of the secrets to gaining a higher PageRank...get inbound links from high PageRanked sites! See Link Building is Good.

Another tip to help increase PageRank is to use a blog as your website. Blogs are spider bait. Google loves them! And be sure to create and use a sitemap. This helps Google and other search engines spider your site easier.

Blogs also allow you to build a deeper site - with lots of pages and lots of content...more spider bait ;-)

Overall, no one really know exactly how Google ranks pages, but by link building and creating lots of content for Google to eat up, you are going to be one step ahead of the next guy!
