What happens during a gastric bypass proceedure?

The Bariatric Surgical proceedure can be performed either using Laparoscopic or Open. Either way the stomach pouch is partitioned with a stapler creating a small pouch. This reduces the stomach capacity to the size of an egg. This smaller pouch produces a feeling of fullness with only small amounts of food. Also the small intestines is re-routed and attached to the pouch. This causes food to bypass most of the stomach and duodenum and empties directly into the "roux limb". Many patients do not experience significant malabsorbtion of food. The ability to consume fluids is not affected, as liquids pass through the pouch very quickly. The only exception to this would be carbonated beverages, which are forbidden.
