What Is A Crazy Quilt?

A Crazy Quilt is not a freaky, wild blanket. The term “crazy quilt” refers to a specific type of patchwork pattern used to make quilts. A typical Crazy Quilt is made with random shapes of various pieces of fabric sewn together on a foundation piece of fabric. Any type of fabric can be used in the making of a Crazy Quilt. Thrifty housewives used leftover bits of fabrics like wool or cotton and little or no embellishment to create more serviceable quilts. The original fancy crazy quilts were made with fancier pieces of fabric, like satin or velvet, left over from making clothing for the family or other household sewing projects. Most Crazy Quilts are embellished further by sewing the pieces of fabric together using fancy embroidery stitches with contrasting thread and adding extra embroidery designs. Pieces of lace, buttons and ribbon can also be added to the quilt. Crazy quilts are not only beautiful, but fun to make and allow the quilter to be quite creative and original in designing the quilt.
