What Is A GoldenDoodle?

By: Tracy

Over the last several years designer dogs have become very popular with breeders as well as pet lovers. These dogs are combinations of purebreds for unique crosses, with the intentions of getting the best of both breeds in one animal. One of the popular crossbreeds available it the Goldendoodle. This is the combination of a Golden Retriever and a Poodle.

The Goldendoodle appears similar to the Poodle with a very similar coat. The coat of the Poodle provides this cross with a non-shedding, hypo-allergenic quality, while the Golden Retriever provides the strong legs of the cross.

The dog breed generally averages in size between the Poodle and Retriever, but due to unpredictability when crossing can be smaller or larger. A female will be approximately 21 -23 inches tall and weigh 45 - 60 pounds. While a male stands 22 - 24 inches and weighs in around 55 - 75 pounds.

Goldendoodle coats as stated earlier are very similar to that of the Poodle. Typically this is very curly to wavy soft hair, but can be straight or rarer versions of the cross. The color of the Goldendoodle varies based on the genes of the Poodle in the mix. The usual color options are chocolate, blond, black, and cream; but red, cafe, silver, parti, or a mix is possible.

The temperament of the dog is overall very good, with the breed being very loyal, and affectionate to their families. They are highly intelligent canines, which tends to make them easy to train. Goldendoodles are very social, so do well with kids and strangers; do not count on them to be effective watchdogs. Owners do need to be cautious of the dog and its keen sense of smell. They do tend to follow their nose so to speak, and will disobey to find the source of good smells.

You would be hard pressed to find another dog breed with as much love for play and enthusiasm as the Goldendoodle. Both Poodles and Golden Retrievers enjoy the water and this carries over on the crossbreed as well. Swimming will quickly become a favorite pastime along with almost any outdoor activity such as hiking and biking. Goldendoodles also make excellent hunting dogs with their keen sense of smell, so they make excellent companions for hunters.

Do to their high energy levels Goldendoodles need plenty of room to play. This breed is not recommended for owners who live in apartments, as a backyard is really needed. This breed also does well in a rural setting, but care should be taken so their nose does not lead them too far from home.

The Poodle and Golden Retriever both have the traits for hip dysplasia, cataracts, and other harmful health issues within their particular breed. These can also be in the Goldendoodle, so ensure you are buying from a reputable breeder who is working to eliminate these traits. Responsible breeders will not use dogs, which display signs of carrying these negative health traits in their breeding stock.
