What is lacrosse? Lacrosse is the name of a sport first developed by Native Americans. It is considered the oldest sport in North America. Lacrosse is played with a stick, the crosse, which is used to move and throw the ball into a goal. Speed and agility are prized in playing lacrosse. The team with the greatest number of goals wins. Lacrosse is gaining popularity. The number of children under the age of 15 playing lacrosse has tripled since 1990, rising from about 40,000 to over 125,000. In addition, approximately 170,000 high school students currently play lacrosse. Interest in the sport at the NCAA level has also grown. There are more than 400 college lacrosse programs.
