What is pate de verre? What is pate de verre? Pate de verre means “paste of glass.” Artists take crushed glass mix it with water and a binder to create a paste that is carefully placed in a mold. Once the mold is full, it is fired in a kiln. The technique dates back to ancient Egypt but was revived and made popular by a group of French artists, including Rene Lalique, during the Art Nouveau period.
