What it means to be an artist
William S. James is a writer. But what does that really mean? William S. James is an artist, but how does he create his art, and for what purpose? To be a writer, you must write, and you write because you must. You are compelled to write whether you are paid or not, because completion of the art is more important than the payday. That is the key to being an artist, you create despite the fact that you are starving and living a sub-standard life. If you make money, you live to eat and drive another day, but likewise, artists have no limits. We artists are all in the same boat, whether your art is words, paintings, mathematics, dance, comedy, chanting, crafts, sculpture, sewing, blogging, building fires, acting, music, tattooing, tying knots, directing, reading poetry, graphics, speech writing, making clothes, growing plants, photography, martial arts, design, debating, calligraphy, canoeing, candles, carving, cooking, hog calling or any other form of expression. Art can liberate and at the same time create shackles. Art can motivate and depress, cause joy and pain, yet it is the only vehicle by which I can envision sustaining long life. Whether I live or die, I will continue my art either in action or in legacy. That is the upside to being an artist, enduring art mimics the closest thing to eternal life. |
