Why your kids should have trading cards.
Trading Cards and Stickers are great. Let there be no mistaking that. I remember way back in 1978 I actually completed Football 78 - if you're from the UK, and of a certain age, you know the one. It was a series produced by Panini and I think that the sticker book and a starter pack of stickers were given away with SHOOT! magazine. Again, you have to be British and of a certain age to know what on earth I am going on about. Anyway, it must have cost me, or my mum and dad a small fortune to complete it. But complete it I did and then... then I gave it away! Doh! It must be worth many many pounds on eBay now? Or not. Nowadays, it seems to be Match Attax that the kids are mad for. My eldest, the only one of the three actually into football, has a pile of these as long as his arm. Well, he earns his pocket money, so I guess it's up to him how he spends it. They keep him quiet, give him and his friends many hours of innocent fun and generally have a value which far exceeds their monetary one. Of course there are many many different series of trading cards available. It seems that every new film or TV series just has to have a trading card or sticker set associated with it. And why not, I suppose that it's a kind of viral marketing that they actually get paid for. Not that Messrs Warner, Disney and the like actually need to get paid anymore, but I digress. Trading Cards and Stickers are wonderful objects to have and to hold. I used to love the sharp edges and woe betide if I stuck them into the book at an angle. Bah! It's like taking the lid off a yoghurt and tearing it! At least with the trading cards, there's no fear of sticking them in skew-whiff. So, to recap. Trading Cards and Stickers are good for kids. They learn the value of precious things - perhaps I didn't. They can trade and barter their swaps. It develops their negotiation skills. I enjoyed them when I was a kid, and I guess that deep down I still do. |
