World Boisphere at Long Point, Ontario

If you are a birdwatcher, fisherman, hunter, naturalist, canoer, boater, icefisherman, etc. you would love this area.

Today Whistling Swans flew over for the first time this Spring. That is my first sign of Spring. They land on the Bay and then head N.W. for the Summer. I love to hear them as they fly overhead.

Long Point has been made a World Biosphere Area. There are pictures on the link. At The very point, where only boats can go, there is a lighthouse. Many shipwrecks are out here from the past when mariners didn't realize there was land jutting out into Lake Erie.

Many rare birds, repiles, amphibians, etc. are found here. A large viewing and educational building draws people from all around the world.

Out on Long Point there is a Bird Banding Station where the migrating birds are caught in nets strung vertically in the trees. Continuously the workers go through and take them and check them physically and weigh and band them. They treat them very gently. Once completed they are set free. Often the same ones have returned.

All along the south side of The Point is a sand beach and it is enjoyed by Provincial Park campers. On the north side there are marshes that lead to the bay. You can see Long Point on any map where it goes out into Lake Erie.

In Winter the ice fishermen wait patiently for freezing so they can take their ice huts out and catch fish. This year it has not been cold enough for this, but it is quite a sight to see when they are all out there.

As with all places naturalsts are trying to preserve the nature that is to be found here.
